Domain soup [newbie]

Hi,

I have recently subscribed to a Titanium account, and have been very pleased with the level of service so far, thank you. The only limitation with JodoHost I have found, seems to be the level of my knowledge ?( , so I was wondering if some kind soul would take it upon themselves to offer me advice and educate me in the ways of domain management.

I have cancelled an account I had with my host in the UK (1&1), and have requested that they release my domain, which they claim to have done. Using the JodoHost H-Sphere CP, I have then added the domain through Other Domain Name Registration & Transfer option, and the domain was duly added. However, the domain still doesn't appear to work properly and it is here that I begin loosing the plot. I would be grateful if you could answer these questions for me:
  1. Does JodoHost act as a domain registrar (or whatever the role is called)?
  2. I found JodoHost after a great deal of time and effort, finally using an independant host review website (http://www.findmyhosting.com/), are there any similar, independant review sites for domains that you recommend?
  3. Finally, can you recommend anyone for managing domains?

I would be grateful for any information you have on the subject, and any advice you can give me. Please bear in mind that I am a newbie in this area, so try not to be too technical with your replies.

Many thanks

Yash,

I'm afraid not. The information they provide is scant at best. I could send them a support request for information, and wait, and wait, and wait for a reply ;). Would you suggest I do this, and if so what kind of information do I require? You may be interested to note that we cancelled our contract, domain and all with them, so it's possible that we need to re-register it...

hmm.. try re-registering it.
If the domain is still registered, do a transfer request and I'm sure they'd let it be transfered out.

I also had an account with one and one and am currently transferring the last two of my domains. One and one seems to operate differently (!) to anyone else. Basically I:
Sent a signed fax to One and One hostmaster requesting that they they let my domains ...... ...... be transferred to godaddy.com.

I use my godaddy.com account to manage all my domains and they have a really easy system for domain transfer. You can then via godaddy update the domain DNS settings to point to Jodohost.

Hope this helps

Nathan

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate you taking the time to answer.

In answer to atulkumar's posting, the domain is karroninternet.co.uk.

Yash, I need advise on re-registering the domain, since I need a longer term solution. It is possible that in time to come, some of our customer's would like us to register and manage their domains for them, so I'm looking for a long term solution that will enable me to do this.

Nathan, thanks for the advice, I'll look into godaddy.com. I was really hoping for some kind of independant review site that would provide information and help me choose the right solution, do you know of any? I found this one, but don't know just how objective they are; http://www.domain-name-center.com/

Thanks again.

I also use godaddy, and know of many others who do. I have about 40 domains in my account with them. Their service is great, simple to use and their prices are about the lowest out there. Hows that for an independant review? :]

Your domain cannot be re-registered as it seems to be in the middle of a registration process. If you haven't already done so, I would simply suggest that your current registrar change the registrant or technical contact email address to your own. Once you have done this you can request the transfer to godaddy. It usually takes about three or four days depending on the how long it takes the registrar to respond to godaddys request on your behalf. It's very painless and I've done it loads of times without any hitch.

The main thing you need to worry about when choosing a registar (in my opinion) is that they allow you to be the registrant of the domain. A registrar that does not allow you to do something as simple as change the DNS should not be allowed to call themselves a registrar in my opinion. Godaddy allow you to do just about anything that can be done and all domains have YOUR name listed as owner..

Hi,

Thanks for your advice. I have decided to give godaddy a try and see how things pan out. Incidentally, my domain with 1&1 still doesn't appear to have been fully released, it is in limbo somewhere. However, on the upside, I have registered the .com's instead.

Thanks.
