I wonder if you can help me...

I'm receiving a lot of bounced emails in my Inbox, where I didn't send the original.

When I look at the original email, it's coming from my domain name with a random selection of letters at the start.

I am pretty certain that I don't have a virus, sending them from my machine, so could anyone suggest how I would go about stopping this?

It doesn't seem to work as expected.

I set the SPF to say 'Pass', expecting it to ask me for an IP or URL allowed to send mail. It doesn't.
Now when I send a mail through my ISP using that domain name, it says my ISPs mail server IP is a permitted sender. How so? It never asked me what IPs were permitted. It just adds 'Pass' to any email bearing my email address no matter where it really came from, which sounds the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do.

Am I missing something here?


It doesn't go away when you switch SPF off either...
 
Hi - I'm confused with this SPF stuff, but I set my domains to FAIL (the default in the CP) and also ticked the box at the bottom and the emails seem to work fine so far. The header from my test email doesn't mention SPF at all.

So...still confused!
 
If you have it set to pass, that's the same thing as having it off :S

Pass means, if it detects an ip from a non-authorized mail server let it pass.

I'd recommend having a look at http://www.openspf.org/ for more information on SPF
 
What I understand is that you should be able to specify who passes which means everyone else would fail.

However, along the lines of what BluJag said, I set mine to PASS and there was no mention of SPF in the email headers, sent from my home PC, through my domain's mail server, and into a non-Jodo hosted account...?
 
SPF is DNS, if the receiving server doesn't lookup the SPF in DNS, it won't have anything.
 
If you check your DNS entries for your domain you'll see a TXT entry along the lines "v=spf1 a mx ~all" this is your SPF entry.

the "~" means "softfail"
the "-" means "fail"
the "?" means "neutral"
the "+" means "pass"

Now the "a mx" is what you declare has authorization to send on behalf of your domain.
The "a" means the host your site is hosted on (localhost)
The "mx" means all mx records for your domain are authorized.

So if I use "v=spf1 a mx -all" that means default is FAIL except the ip of my site and all ips listed as MX for that domain. Which is what I gathered you wanted to accomplish

If you use "+all" or PASS ..then all emails will be accepted because your default value is PASS.

If you want to authorize an IP (example: 127.0.0.1) to send on behalf of your domain which isn't the "a" or "mx" then edit your TXT entry to this:
"v=spf1 a mx ip4:127.0.0.1 -all"

As Stephen mentioned above, SPF only works when the mail server recieving the email supports it or has it enabled.
 
Sorry, you've lost me...what settings should I apply under my CP, and where would I put v=spf1 a mx -all ? Or do I just choose FAIL under the SPF configuration?

Your SPF is working as intended (good tool to test here.)
The email received was probably due to neobee.net not having a mail server that supports SPF ..or simply doesn't have it enabled.

SPF does work but unfortunately it's dependent on the mail server receiving the mail to support it or have it enabled.
It's not perfect, but it does help reduce the amount of SPAM on the net...and any reduction is most welcome.
