how do i develop alonside existing site?

hi,

I am starting to re-design a new site, to replace my existing one. what is the best solution to this, to keep the existing one online, at domain.com.

Do i have a sub domain, testing.domain.com or just have a folder. domain.com/newsite which i test on, then once finished, just put a re-direct on or???

I ask becuase i will be using a joomla solution, so not sure how it will handle the directory structure.

I typically suggest subdomain as the structure stays the same and in the config you will only need to change the subdomain to take it out when you move the files.

How about developing locally?

That is the best option especially if it is in asp/asp.net/php/perl and untested code.
