As discussed and announced on this forum, we recently took a cage at the Miami Exchange facility that is located a short distance away from the NAP. MiaX is a state of the art facility recently acquired by the investment group Carlyle. They since their acquisition last year have pumped in tens of millions of dollars in making MiaX one of the best datacenters in the world. the Carlyle group currently operates the One Wilshire datacenter in Los Angeles, which is a major hub for telecommunications and ISP majors on the West coast. The MiaX datacenter is being linked by the Carlyle Group to the Wilshire datacenter via a private network which would in the near future, give our clients a direct path of access to these networks.
We have decided to move a majority of our servers from the NAP of Americas to Miami Exchange. As explained in an earlier announcement (http://support.jodohost.com/general-announcements/9426-miami-exchange-future.html), we have been working to setup our space at MiaX for the last 2 months, and have been planning this entire operation since October 2006 when the NAP (which is running out of space on their current floor) imposed a low cap on how much power we could draw per rack (limiting us to under 20 servers per rack). This made staying and expanding at the NAP long term very expensive for us, given the already astronomical costs for space and power at that datacenter. Other issues such as slow-security access to our servers and slow servicing work by them when asked for cross-connects or power circuits forced us to consider this move. We have on the otherhand been able to sign a long-term contract with MiaX that gives us access to great space, power and service at reasonable costs for the forseable future. With the server move, a whole range of networking and physical improvements have been designed at our MiaX space to reduce downtime issues in the future and to future-proof our network and setup as the volume of traffic and customers here at JodoHost continues to grow
We have setup a private network between the NAP and MiaX, which operates at 1gbps and has been tested and fully deployed. This means, when we move our servers from the NAP to MiaX, they can be plugged in and become live instantly on our network when turned on. This server move involves ABSOLUTELY NO network or IP change. Nothing will change in terms of your route to our servers, and the network will be exactly the same. We will continue to use InterNAP as our primary network provider, but also plan to add new connectivity at MiaX. The only downtime would be a short ride between datacenters.
The first server move will be done in batches of 4 around midnight starting Friday. The approximate downtime per server will be 45min to an hour as we will also be patching the server with the latest security updates. The first batch of servers will be moved Friday night, and a detailed scheduled is posted below
I would like to reiterate that we have spared no expense in planning and preparation for this server move. We have flown in our top staff to the Miami, and have pushed alot of money into quality equipment for our MiaX operation.
We will continue to maintain a presence at the NAP of Americas, some of our servers and routing equipment will remain there. All routing infact will continue to be done for our network from the NAP for the near future. We are not abandoning the NAP, and we will consider to expand our commitment at the NAP if they re-think their power policies in the future (something they may do when they service their upcoming 4th floor).
The entire relocation procedure is a low-risk procedure. Please do not confuse it with server or a datacenter migration. Nothing will change for you as a customer in terms of your website, data, IPs, email, network route, etc etc. The only thing you will experience is under an hour of downtime for your server, and the knowledge that your server was moved to a newer facility with improved facilities compared to the current one. During the relocation, JodoHost.com will remain operational and you will be able to use live chat 24x7x365 as usual.
