web services?

a client has an existing SQL db (based at his office) which he would like me to connect to from the website.

he said i should look into 'web services' (maybe part of .NET?) because it has better security than plain old stored procedures.

can anyone confirm this, and point me in the right direction (especially seen as i'm a classic ASP man.... for now)
