Win 5 Down?

Were any of the servers down last night, my monitoring service gave me three outages last night, one about 30 min, the second only about 5 and the thrid was about 80 min. What happened?

Definately not

There was absolutely no outage on Win5 during the last 24 hours. Could you please open a ticket and forward your uptime stats so we can look into it

All downtime events are present in the "Network Outages" forums.

OK, I guess I need to find a different monitoring system, too bad it is the one that Jodohost uses.

They happened through the night, so I was not able to verify if the server was down or not. Thanks for the info guys.

What service do you use Ron?

I'm actually very surprised to hear that any monitoring software reported us down for 3 times within a 12 hours period and that too for a total of over 2 hours

We use nagios interally which checks HTTP on the servers every 5 minutes. Absolutely no downtime alert we have for Win5.

If we are down for 2 hours, we normally get a flood of tickets and phone calls but it was a pretty uneventful night for us :)

Win5 has been unavailable at various times over the last few days. I use a few free site checkers and they have all reported unavailability.

this is from yoursiteup.com:
09-30-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s)
10-02-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s)
10-04-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s)
10-07-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s)
10-08-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s)
10-10-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s)
10-14-2004: 83.33% Uptime : 4 Failure(s)
10-15-2004: 91.67% Uptime : 2 Failure(s) (5:23PM EST, 6:49AM EST)
10-16-2004: 95.83% Uptime : 1 Failure(s) (10:30am EST)

it only checks every hour, so the percentage downtime figures are exaggerated, but if I've been here when it reports downtime, it's normally not available for me, either. websitepulse reported win5 down overnight, too. also at 5:23pm est.

1. From how many servers they monitor your site?
2. If they run their monitoring software from one server what is the uptime of that server?
3. If they run their monitoring software from more than one server, how they compile results ie real time or off-line?
4. What is uptime of network connectivity at data center where server is located?

I find those figures difficult to believe as they contradict our own uptime stats from Nagios. Win5 has definately not been going down every day

From the looks of it, these free website monitoring utilities are totally inaccurate.

those Uptime stats look way off to me if you compare it to mine. I use aletra at a 5min ping. It costs money but its worth it and it gives me pretty accurate stats. I've had only 3 outages recorded in total for Win5 this month and all are pretty minor except the disk problem on the 8th:
http://support.jodohost.com/showthread.php?t=2869

It seems JodoHost has done a very good job with Win5 uptime. At least all those ASP or ASP.NET issues don't occur and when there is an outage, its genuinely network related.

Like I said, the percentage stats are inaccurate because these servers only check once per hour. I ignore the alerts if I only get it from one service, for the reasons Atul asked.

However, two different site monitoring servers found win5 unavailable at 5:23pm EST on the 15th, like I said. I was here when the mail came in and I couldn't get it either. I don't know how long it was unavailable, because I didn't sit here and check it every minute till it came back. The site monitors say it was okay when they checked again an hour or so later.

If your monitoring system says the server wasn't down, fair enough. It must have been some network problem that meant the server wasn't available from three different locations at the same time.
