Download speeds - need a few 2nd opinions :)

Stephen, could I direct you to a post of yours from a long time back…
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showpost.php?p=4125964&postcount=2

“I test each windows server daily and expect 150kb/s downloads(HTTP and FTP) at all times when on my 1.5mb DSL connection I use to test.”

Nobody who tested the files from my site got anywhere near 150kbytes/sec. Most got ~50. I get 28. My client is concerned, as am I. I must say that from another host, also in Florida, I can get close to 200kb/s.

That says to me something is amiss. But am I right to assume that no amount of badgering on my part will get you to resume looking into it? I like it here, there are lots of great things about Jodo - but it seems I’ll have to move at least this one client somewhere else unless the issue is resolved.

Antic,

You are mistaken to believe I have ever quit looking into it. I have CONTINUALLY looked into it but I can’t do anything to this point, I even have a support issue in with internap about the FCP device on the network to see if it could cause anything like this.

I have never QUIT looking at any point I just cant control it at this point.

Ok thanks Stephen, that’s great - you just left me with that impression from previous posts, saying there was “nothing we can do”, etc. ?( Not sure what you wanted me to think about that, but it’s left me feeling frustrated, hence the badgering.

Thank you for looking into it, I hope something comes to light. Please keep me informed if possible, so I can tell clients that something is happening.

Cheers!

Soo… Stephen, my good man. Any updates on this issue?

I’m still getting 28KB/sec from Windows sites (Win22, Win7, Win11), and 210KB/sec from a Unix site (Web?? shared ip 64.187.101.31). Why are the Win boxes so slow?

:violin:

ok now you are getting a difference thatis quite noticable hrm, I have checked everything, the TCP stack is open and tweaked on most servers, there is 0 throttle on anything but some ram and cpu limits and that is only on certain pools that cause 400+ mb spikes in ram or 60%+ spikes in cpu on a regular basis. This wouldn’t limit the download speed, it would jsut kill the download during a recycle if it happened.

It was always noticable to me. I think I told you about the win vs unix thing previously, perhaps in a PM.

If there’s anything else you want me to test/compare, let me know. I have a couple of account on another host, also Florida-based, and downloads are decent, ~200KB/s. Something could be up with a switch to those boxes?

If you put a file up on some other Win boxes, I’ll happily test d/l speeds until we pinpoint the slow ones. Either they’re ALL like this, or just some are. Either way, it’ll point us in a direction, yes? One thing is it seems only Win sites are affected, although I’ve only checked 1 unix site so obviously that’s surmise.

it is the same switch for win7 and 11 as many unix servers notihng switch based for sure

Test this one please, I need to know what speeds you are getting across a larger download and I have put one up that is a compressed MSI and then compressed ZIP, so it can’t do much other compression in TCP layer like some TXT files can.

This also won’t cont against anyone’s bandwidth to test:

SCreen caps I attached are form a little tray downloader addon for firefox called download statusbar if you want to make things exactly the same

Here is win7 for me:

BTW I copied between the two servers on server to server in a matter of 4 seconds, it was basically how long it took me to ok the download dialog and location to save, it could have been faster had it done a direct save without prompt.

win7adminpak.jpg

btw, you did mention unix but the difference was never almost 150KB/s that I remembered seeing.

also here is the reason I wanted a larger file:

Update me when you can

I’m getting 33kb/s on that file on a 1.5mb adsl connection- Sydney AU

Thanks, I need anyone else that is willing to test it to let me know

no worries, about 32-33kb/s for the win14 link

ok so it is holding steady at that, while for me on DSL it is over 235-244 range steady. :frowning: Internally it is multiple MB(byte not bit) a second as it should be.

They day I was testing win14 I even started a large backup operation while I was testing to see that disk IO load was extreme in addition to regular web content.

Hi Stephen, thanks for looking further into this. Sorry for the delay, I only just got notification of replies. Yep as with the other two guys, it’s very slow, the same 28KB/sec for me (see pic). Can you put up another file on a Unix server to check that again? We must be on to something there, if that’s constantly faster than Win server files.

On a whim, I tried downloading a support doc from here: http://www.jodohost.com/downloads/user.zip

But still got 28KB/sec. So I tried downloading the zip file from my unix test account to compare again ( http://d2826846.ao81.activeorg.com/yui_2.5.0.zip ) and as before, got 210KB/sec, almost 10 times faster (see pic 1). So it seems something funky is going on at the Win server level. And only HTTP, since FTP speed from Win servers is still perfectly fine (see pic 2).

I guess it’s a good sign.. it means the network or route itself from here to there isn’t the problem. The issue is something to do with the Win servers there at Jodo, and specifically HTTP, which means it’s fixable if Stephen can weave his magic and track it down. :cheer2:

But if it was windows, why would it not be consistent? That is my question on this whole matter.

hi, I think he’s happy with the consistancy…just not the speed. 28kb/s vs 210kb/s

[ed rewrite] I see what you mean.. why are others getting slightly higher speeds, and your local speed is fast? Yeah that’s a tricky one… I get 28KB/sec, others get an average of 50KB/sec. Only 1 person got above 100KB/sec but he’s in the US.

Is it possible that NAP just doesn’t have very good connection outside the US? But then FTP is fast… which would imply NAP is throttling HTTP outside the US, but I assume you’ve investigated that? And then it’s only Windows HTTP, not Unix HTTP! http://www.onceuponalife.com/forums/images/smilies/gah.gif Is that possible? To throttle only Windows servers?
