Mail 4 Delays????

Hello,

I once again we are seeing email delays.

Is there anything going on with Mail4???

Web Mail is also EXTREMELY slow.

Checking.. only 50k messages in queue.

Something is definitely wrong as I can’t get any mail from there… they don’t even show up in the web mail… of course that is extremely slow at the moment.

You confused me… you said the queue is small in this thread, but in the other thread you said that it was huge: http://support.jodohost.com/showthread.php?t=8066

Is there a spammer flooding the mail4 server???

50,000 at a moment to be delivered means a huge SMTP queue and a lot many delivered or being delivered.

So is this valid emails? Is our mail server being overloaded and can no longer handle demand? Is it a spammer?

My client is so pissed at me. He was hacked yesterday, he has had sluggish access to his web a number of occasions, and his email has been backed up like this probably 10 times in the last 6 months.

If I was him I would have moved to another host already. Can you or someone shed some light on how this email server can be put under better control OR can his mailboxes be moved to another mail server than can handle the load?

Yes all valid, but still a TOS violation. a client have created a mailing list of 50,000 subscribers and most of them are bouncing, so certainely not a valid list.

is it for mails or webmail? they are seperate stuff and shouldnt be counted equally.
As far as yesterday’s hack is concerned, i explained a while back on livechat about privelege escalation and this just happened. We are going to be a bit strict on server side, but it is more in favor of all.
Again, I do understand and apologize for these recent issues.

I’m not sure you can find many hosts with the grade of H/w we use. We are certainely working on this and are laying out a few policy for near future that will certainely help in such problems. This grade of H/w can handle much more than what it has, but users must understand that they shouldnt exercise the freedom of dedicated servers on shared servers.

I appreciate all the help, but my customer just walked into my office and said quote:

“You are awesome, you manage to know exactly what is going on and get things fixed, but there are just too many problems for me to run a business. I have to constantly check my email and web server to see if they are up and running or if they are back up. I can’t focus on my business, because I am focused too much on whether my services were up and running.”

He went on to say:

“I use to be with apollo hosting and never had a problem until that one month where they couldn’t fix anything and I had to move. I was with them for 4 years and never had a single email lost and never saw my web site down… and am on it all the time”

He then said:

“As much as I like you and as much as you seem to understand the problems that take place I need to find somewhere that stays up and running at full speed AND has good support as well.”

And finally he said:

“I am going to go to 1on1 hosting… I have a business partner that uses this for his site and he has never had a single email downage or web downage. I’m sorry, but thank you for all your efforts, but we can’t keep bailing water”

So… I’m a bit unhappy at the moment. Again I appreciate all that jodo host does to keep things going, but he is correct… he needs to worry about his business, not whether or not today the mail server queue is backed up or if his web site is sluggish.

Yes I know this happens in many places, but I have to admit I have worked with this one client for many, many years when his hosting was elsewhere and I remember him almost NEVER have an issue. I think they had one email blip in the 4+ years he was with them and trust me he sends email and keeps a close eye on things.

Sorry for sounding negative, but I think some honest feedback is needed. Perhaps some tighter reigns on email or setting up a separate email server for folks that are exceeding x number a month. My guess is those that send out these large subscriber lists have signed the mail agreement with jodo, but it seems it leads to more problems than not.

Again sorry for the negativity, but trying to shoot straight with Jodo.

As for the hacking issues goes, I’m sure you know that this isn’t a regular event at jodohost. I won’t cover that.

As for Mail4 goes, flooding is something that can happen and will happen again and its something we just cannot prevent. we have significantly reduced the occurences by having a mass-mailing permission system but it still can be exploited in a certain number of ways and closing down those ways means reducing functionality.

Flooding simply means that there is more mail in the queue due to a user’s activity and that email processing has slowed down. That does not mean there is a loss of email. there is NEVER a loss of email

Last week we took the decision to boost the processing power of all mail servers by changing all of them to dual cores (meaning 4 cores). That is quite a bit of power considering CPU idles for 30% of the day. A maintenance will be scheduled shortly (the processors should arrive today)

WebMail gets slow during a flood because HTTP is served by that mail server. it is best to use a standard email client if you are having trouble with our webmail clients

You might want to tell your client that we get tons of customers from 1&1 each month. Each of them complaining of poor uptime or poor support.

Well… it was hard for me to make a defense without sounding defensive, but I wished him luck and told him that he needed to do some research because I recall some bad things from them, but he is basing his decision on someone that doesn’t have any problems.

The sad thing is this gentlement doesn’t send a lot of email and doesn’t have anything but an almost basic html site with maybe one mail script. So he is what I consider one of the basic how can it go wrong customers.

I’m a bit depressed, because I only do this for a handful of people anyway and when a friend and someone you do consulting for leaves your services there must be something wrong.

I am glad to hear the mail servers are going to be bumped up, I hope they will be able to handle the loads.

I would go co-location or dedicated server in a heartbeat, but I would have to have a windows server, linux server, mail server, sql server, and mysql… which is why I am using a reseller service.

To be honest I cannot stand being on any shared server, because of the inherent issues, but when it takes all of the above to provide what is needed it gets costly.

Oh well.

Ok, I have spoken with my client again and he may possibly stay for a little longer if we move him to a different web server and mail server.

Can he be moved so he is on a different web and mail server???

You can PM me if needed.

bump

We can move him to a different web server. Put in a ticket for that.
Mail server cannot be changed, but tell him we are upgrading it on saturday to add additional processing power

hmmm… his biggest issue has been with mail… yes he has had some web issues too, but mail is the main thing he wants changed. So there is no way to get him on a different mail server as well?

I can’t recall… is the upgrade a complete system swap or just adding a second processor?

Would this upgrade have prevented what happened with the 50,000 email newsletter?

I have a feeling if I cannot get him onto a new mail server he will not stay. I have already told him they are being upgraded, but he will probably ask why were they not upgraded before the performance issues started showing up. Plus if he stays and even with the new hardware if the queue gets backed up any time soon he will drop it like a bad habit and the word of mouth will be more damaging than anything.

Although I don’t really push hosting as much as consulting and providing these services… but I don’t want to have anything negative against me.

I also see where the mail4 server will go through some maintenance on saturday (today) http://support.jodohost.com/showthread.php?t=8074 , but I don’t see where it is hardware upgrades. It just mentions anti-spam settings.

Will this also be the hardware upgrade?

What are the changes?

Thanks

So there is absolutely no way to get this customer moved to a new web site and mail server???

Being that I am trying to keep a client there should be some way to do this!

What about completely deleting his accounts and starting over? Of course I would rather not do it that way.

He is wanting to know tomorrow or he will be moving to another host. Please see what can be done.

Thank you.

Mail server can only be changed if you first delete the domain and then add in CP. New mailboxes will then be created on new mail server.
