Is Jodohost on a blacklist again? A client got an email bouce from a valid address with the folowing:
208.45.133.151 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [204.14.104.85] blocked using blackholes.myway.com; Your message could not be delivered. See http://blackholes.myway.com/ Error: WS-05 Giving up on 208.45.133.151.
I’m getting hundreds of spam per day on my own account and other clients are complaining. I’m basically moving them to other hosts at this point and only using Jodohost for my own sites. I can’t afford the headaches of all the spam and gettign blacklisted. Jodohost is a good bunch of guys but the spam seems out of control.
Something must be done. I am to busy with webwork to deal with this crap. Hosting support is fine and thats my job, but when its SPAM SPAM SPAM on my end, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
Contacted Live Chat, they said they would fix it but doesn;t help me now, client is gone.
This isn’t some game where we can go “oh sorry” Clients get pissed at leave due to all the spam and then to get their business emails blocked on top of that doesn’t sit well.
Agreed but I see no reply on the issue and Live Chat didn’t seem to think it was a big issue “we will fix it soon” Thanks, I’ll tell my ex client that!
No forwards are causing the blacklistings, SPAM incoming does not cause blacklistings.
One thing you may want to to do limit some spam is turn OFF mail relay, Psoft has designed it improperly and it allows spammers to hit it and bypass the main mail server anti spam settings.
Thanks Stephen, I didn’t mean to imply the spam incoming was related to the blacklisting, it is jsut that many see it as related issues. They get loads of spam that piss them off and then they can’t send emails due to blacklists.
I’ve been getting a lot of bounces back lately from spammers using our domaisn as return addresses, I’d suspect that is leading to blacklistings would it not? Again there is nothing I can do if spammers use our domains for fake sent mail I assume.
Most of the clients are complaining that the spam filters are just so poor regardless of what setting is used. Other hosts just seem to do a ebtter job, not all but some and hence why they are leaving us.
schooner,
I understand that spam is bad, but changing hosts really does not fix the issue. We are using a large amount of RBLs (these are what rejects mail like you are getting sometimes from maybe comcast), we are using SpamAssassin, we are also using badmailfrom filtering to blacklist domains that are repeatedly sending spam to our servers.
We are also workign to implement a multi-pronged attack against it with MailWise commercial anti spam filtering, but I already can see some people complaining because it marks a valid email as spam quite regularly. We have to sort through postini or mailwise daily becuase it picks up some tickets as spam(this happens to about 3-10 tickets a day) and we have to release it into the ticket system. This is the reason (now) that sometimes a ticket will take a couple hours, it it got caught then it did not make it to the system and we sort it manually there. Part of this issue is cerberus’s crazy design, with every mail having the same FROM address, that being the case we can not whitelist the address or we would get 800-1000 spam tickets a day in the helpdesk from the multiple addresses it listens to.
I am wanting to setup a internal RBL, this would be controlled directly by us, and regular abuse could be forwarded to us and the IPs could be blocked in the local RBL. We are also testing a different mail gateway device other than mailwise that would sit in front of the mail servers, but we are not ready to move either solution to production. And mailwise will likely be an optional service because of the management time required(for the end user) to make sure they are getting all their mail.
There is no perfect solution any spam filter will have false positives and right now the mailwise is a good solution because it allows the end user to login and tell it what is spam and nto spam, and to set rules for it, etc.
Trust me Stephen I understand but it is near impossible to explain to a client. They see a mass of spam and bloacklists and get pissed off and leave. Because of that I’m gettign out of the hosting game. I’m keeping my Jodohost accounts jsut for my own use and projects I manage but not for third party reselling. The headaches are too much for a few dollars a month.
I agree the spam is put of control, it just seems like I get a lot more on Jodohost accounts than any others and clients have said hte same since moving
I tell them there isn’t much we can do but the blacklist reallt upset them and scared them off. Their new host may be no better but at least it wont be my issue.
With that said I still need thigns to improve, I’m dealing with hundreds and hundres of spam a day. I never wake up after 6 hours of sleep to find less than 300+ emails, 95% or more of which are spam or bouncebacks from fake return addresses. All day its spurts of 3-20 spam emails on each email check.
It certainly seems that way as I get spam on accounts that I haven’t actively used in years, butthen agai nsome are not even configured now on Jodohost, jsut come in the catch all so I think it is safe to say that isn’t the case perhaps.
Looks like much the same I get. I guess removing a catch all would help as well but when your in business I would rather take the spam that risk a valid email
