How good is Thunderbirds junk/spam filters? Is it constantly being updated like some of the pay products?
It uses the users preferences to learn what is spam and what is not. After about a week it knows very well exactly what the USER thinks is spam and what is not, as per their own preference.
As Stephen says, it learns from user input (simply hitting the ‘Junk’ button when you see a spam)
I find it does reasonably well and, like other products, will REDUCE the number of junk email that get throught but not eliminate them entirely. Spammers, although slimey, are good at coming up with new and improved ways of sending you email that nobody reads anyway.
I hate to keep bringing this up, But this spam is getting worst and worst on your servers, I am getitng complaints and it has just gotten awful. Just pages and pages of spam are coming through on most of the domains on my accounts.
Today so far I see just my personel domains almost over 40-50. I don’t understand you guys see the Subjects why can’t this be used to stop this crap, because its getting worst not better. Something has got to be done…
One of the words now why can’t this be listed to be blocked. I don’t get it. Please try to get this crap tone down for your clients so we don;t have to listen to our clients on our end.

this is not spam “on our servers” this is GLOBAL spam is on the rise everywhere.
Want to start a spam hunting squad? Carry paintball guns, and go to visit some spammers houses make sure they know why you are there when they answer the door and let them have it?

How come some of the words like VnIAGRA and the others used over and over, cant they be blocked.. VnIAGRA is used alot.

I use SpamBayes with Outlook and it does a terrific job. Even though there is the occasional false negative or positive (most often the Hsphere negative balance reminders 
) it correctly identfies 99% of my incoming.
Just remember that it takes a bit of “training”. I now keep a folder of over 1,000 spam and my regular archives to “teach” it right from wrong when I install Outlook.
AS an FYI… we are also getting swamped with new spam and it is making it through or corporate anti-spam solution. These guys are simply getting better at defeating the systems… It is not JUST a JodoHost issue… it is internet wide.
Spammers are hijacking the internet infrastructure. High speed connections will soon slow to dial up speeds, due to spam traffic. Our email system will soon become useless. Every attemp to twart spammers will be met with a way to defeat the new detection methods. Every improvement of the infrastructure will benifit spammers, and be swallowed up by them.
Dealing with it when it hits our inbox is too late.
I check 25 mailboxes with OE and I don’t get spam. I don’t have a filter. I used to get tons of it, but I stopped it cold. If a spammer tries to send to me or a clients protected mail box, It is stopped before it leaves the spammers outbox.
I use whitelists and a simple stragegy.
My business is small, so I can address things a little differently than larger developers, who need a whitelist system, editable on the mailserver level, by the end user/box holder.
We are done with most of the changes here. More will come in next phase. I hope there should be a minimal decrease in spam, atleast the URL spams.

Hi, Please can you detail all the changes you have made and the effects they will have on us and anything we need to be aware of. I personally would like to receive all emails including junk as I may lose something which is important to my business. I get a lot of junk but I am hardly effected as I use spambayes which gets 99.9% of them.
and please tell us about the changes expected in the next phase.
It is addition of some network based checks for spamassassin.
I’m also about add some rules for specific spam.
For next phase, we are planning to re-route few of the mails that are currently being sent through mailservers and place some strict checks here. They will be published when it happens.
Spam as improved the last few days, but tonight here we go again. In one hour started gettting hit again…

My spam is ‘way’ down since last Saturday, and I have clients reporting the same. The filter updates seem to have made a huge difference, and Thunderbird filters have caught all the rest (every one!).
I don’t know if it’s been proposed before, it may already exist, but why not incorporate a spellchecker in the spam filter? Even if a mail is genuine, people who make that many spelling mistakes in an email don’t deserve to have their mail read. My four year old can spell ‘mortgage’ and ‘vitamin supplement’, ffs. (Not sure about ‘Viagra’, but I make it a rule never to buy that from four-year-olds, anyway).
A much bigger problem is our mailservers being blacklisted, though. I would like to hear some proposals about a separate mailserver that can be used only by long-established and well-vetted JH users…one that would eliminate even the possibility of anonymous spammers setting up an account to send out thousands of mails before they’re caught. (If I read Tanmaya correctly, something like that might be on the cards…?) Lately it seems to be on the increase, and I’m convinced that the practice of IP-changing to defeat the spam-lists will end in disaster. It might even be viewed as spammer-friendly hosting. Incoming spam might be an infuriating, time-wasting nuisance, but blacklisting can shut our business down overnight.

That my work in a homogenous language environment, but in areas such as mine which boasts a population speaking 3 official languages and over 10 ?unofficial? languages, it would eliminate about 98% of our legitimate emails. Perhaps as an opt-in?
Does anyone know if Hotmail has blacklisted jodo? as I do not seem to be able to receive emails on any hotmail accounts from Jodo? anyone else have this problem?

Naturally you’d need an opt-in and/or language selection. There are also a few people (and companies) I can think of that would have to be whitelisted right away. 
Oddly enough, I almost never receive spam in any language other than badly-spelt* english, apart from one account that gets mostly spam in portuguese for some unfathomable reason… have spammers adopted english as the universal language, or do you get spam in all your other languages, too?

Mailserver blacklisting is mostly 4 reasons:
- Autoresponders
- Bounces ( we have checks to take care of most of them)
- Spamming
- forwards
For 1, Stephen’s suggestion has been taken seriously by Psoft and they have implemented it in 2.5.1 beta3.
For 3, you never know who will spam. Sometimes they sit for days and suddenly spam one fine day. Another problem, most clients just do a phpBB,mambo or Joomla,etc.. install and never care to update. One day they are hacked and you see floods of spam.
For 4, almost all anti-spam systems fail to detect it. I have seen many Jodohost users complaining back to us via Spamcop where they received spam mail on one of their account (hosted with Jodohost), but was reported to spamcop at their ISP’s mailbox that receives forwarded mail. Spamcop’s system is not capable to detect actual sender.
We will probably introduce a seperate system for autoresponders. And maybe disable forwards at all or introduce some kind of filtering on this.
