Bumpage to solicit a reply to JH staff regarding the spf record issue; trouble ticket forthcoming if no answer here.
You can just make the SPF record, there is no problem in this.
Stephen, could you give us a quick instructions about options to configure SPF in HPSphere? I have read psoft manual but it’s not clear for me wich is the optimal option to configure .
Thanks
are there any news about SPAM FILTERING?

Is there anyway to filter spam ? . The SPAM is about 50% of all my emails , and my customers are sufering same situation.
I think that now it is a serious problem that could finish with a lot of customers lost, because our mail service is one of the worst in the market, due to great amount of spam received. Very good uptime, but very bad email service.
Even free email services has better SPAM filter than our email services .
I know that from jodohost is working about it , but this situation is extending in the time and it is making ungry all our customers.
We are working with a company that is designing us a custom API to control their commercial spam filters. We should have it ready within 7 to 14 more days.
Hi JodoHost,
We need a solution for this and quickly. Our clients are starting to be very upset and in order to care for their needs we are currently looking for other options that will help us address this SPAM issue in a more proactive way.
We are fighting SPAM very effectively (~95%) on our Unix servers and we understand that a good solution needs muscle to power it. We are hopeful that your proposed solution will be effective but not at the expense of the servers health or our clients applications.
It would be very easy to say that it is up to the end user to control SPAM and Virii coming into their mailboxes and to adopt the stance that the servers health and ability to serve applications are the most important function of the server, but you must understand that email is the NUMBER ONE concern for all of the clients on a server. Static forms of communication like web pages are important, but dynamic communication via email is absolutely essential.
I am a SysAdmin too and I understand the amount of time and hard work that goes into having and keeping a healthy and well balanced server. Several of our unix servers handle over 500K messages per week and the vast majority of that is SPAM. It is getting much worse by the day and has tripled in the last 3 months time across the entire industry due the number of botnets running on home/workplace PC’s and exploited servers around the world. Step slow and sure into the solution as stopping SPAM takes patience and time. Its not going to be an immediate success but as long as the flood slows down a little more each day and we can see it happening on the client end then we will be doing well.
Turn off http on a server and you might get a few ecommerce or forum driven web clients to notice that their websites are down, but turn off email and within seconds the whole clientbase on that server will be calling you. I speak from experience when I tell you that messing around with email will result in an immediate loss of revenue. We can not afford to have that happen and I know that you can’t either.
Jodo, I am sure that you will not let us down and please hurry, the thought of migrating all of these clients to another host is already making my head spin.

[COLOR=“Red”]I agree, I am at my wits end with some of my clients, basically waiting for a better solution. Even my accounts are getting too much spam and I am growing very tired of it now.
I get about 30 of the following types of emails every day:

I hate to be cynical here but personally I think that there has to be acceptance that some spam is going to get through. Best efforts are not going to eliminate spam and may only lead to additional false positives which is a whole other rant that I’m sure will develop.
There are about 12.5 billion spam emails sent per day on average and account for over 40% of total email on the Internet. It is a daunting task to try and filter this and if you think there are issues at JodoHost, just try browsing the forums of other major hosts… same complaints.
To minimize your spam level to something that is acceptable (which doesn’t mean zero - for me, 20-30 per day is good) make sure that you set your anti-spam to very aggressive and use the spam/junk filtering found in most email clients today (Thunderbird/Outlook etc). I think you’d be really surprised at the amount of spam that the current filters remove for you; if for some reason the filter goes down I know immediately that they are off… the spam gates open.
Anyway, I do appreciate the work the JH is doing to improve the situation but just wanted to say that spam is a bigger issue and not limited to Jodohost and JH clients and their clients have to realize that.
Hmmm… I can feel the flames already.
Remeber: patience is a virtue… if you can’t be patient, kill a spammer. You can start here: http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/spammers.lasso
Oh I realize it SPAM will always get through, no question there. But since about August the SPAM levels are very high. I have numerous accounts at various hosts (both dedicated and shared) and the SPAM coming through here is about 600% more than any of my other accounts easily.
spam levels have increased across all hosts, across the board. On the PSOFT Hsphere forum, there are 10 active threads about the spam problem and possible solutions.
I’ve been working on this issue every day, for the last 2 weeks. So we are not sitting on this. But it isn’t an easy solution to fix. We have installed and tried several anti spam gateways, and we are hoping to set up one within the next two weeks.
We also contracted MailWise to provide us with commercial spam filtering. I will be signing an agreement with them wednesday and hopefully we can provide customers with free antispam filtering service from them as well.
I need time here. I know spam is very annoying. But it is a very tough problem to deal with given the amount of email we process (almost 1 million emails a day)
Just to play devil’s advocate - is your email address at JH more publically used (and harvested) than the other ones?
Personally I haven’t seen any significant increase in spam since August - same level for the most part -possibly slightly higher but could be spammer adaption to filter techniques.
Yes, I use to get 100 spam emails a day. We are using jodohost.com and some internal domains as a test bed for anti spam solutions we are trying out.
Right now we are considering to implement DSPAM globally:
http://dspam.nuclearelephant.com/
working with the developer to customise it to our needs. The issue here is that it isn’t effective until it is trained, and training needs customers to help. Once trained, it can be very effective.
The problem with DSPAM and all open source solutions (another we are considering is ASSP) is that it has no user interface. The developer is going to make us a user interface that allows customers to see blocked email, and forward it to them. He is also creating a redundant clustered gateway for us. And we’re going to be paying a pretty penny for it.
Another issue is we cant implement something like greylisting because customer SMTP traffic and public SMTP traffic come in via the same IP.. That is a very effective tool against hacked PCs sending out spam.. One host said it cut spam 99%. But really, if we implement this customers would need to switch to say SMTP SSL not to get issues from it. And it will be a support nightmare for us
greylisting works by automatically rejecting a incoming smtp connection (from a new IP) for a certain time frame (1 to 10 minutes). All good mail systems retry sending that email. Spamming systems don’t.
Great Yash - that is much appreciated and we look forward to the new anti-spam weapons.
The details you’ve pointed out really support my point that spam is a huge issue and not limited to JH - and the resources that JH, as a hosting provider, are dedicated to try and mitigate this problem are applaudable. I hope that JH clients realize that there is no simple fix and will take some time and that JH is moving forward on these issues and not ignoring them.
I can’t wait for this day!![]()
Yash-
Any update on the status of things regarding MailWise? Our clients are gettign really restless and we may have to move to another company soon or risk losing them.
“We also contracted MailWise to provide us with commercial spam filtering. I will be signing an agreement with them wednesday and hopefully we can provide customers with free antispam filtering service from them as well.”
Thanks,

They were suppose to email me yesterday. Ill give you an update tomorrow.
Just some small stats from mail3 as indication of increasing spam:
mails rejected at smtp session:
584461
Total mails received:
300994
mails received, but rejected after content check:
117458
mails received, but rejected being virus infected:
4208
So, total mails received(or could have been received) by the mailserver:
885455
and total mails delivered to mailboxes:
179328
That is just 20% of total mails. Similiarily mail4 is delivering 27%.
The stats are for November 9.
