Hello guys,
I know new operating system support, new database server support etc. are up to PSoft and not necessarily responsibility of Jodo, but since I cannot contact PSoft, I have to ask you.
What are plans/chances of supporting/offering Windows 2008 with IIS7 and MS SQL Server 2008 before end of the year 2008?
OK, thank you for being honest.
I’m not sure I understood correctly: You are looking for replacement for HSphere or You are looking for ways to offer it under special terms like you introduced SQL 2005?
Stephen - this is the best news I hear in the last 3 years from jodo - I mean if you begin using dotnetpanel. Also it will be good if you use it on VPS - I thing it is free. A control panel written in asp.net for win server will always be the best choice for windows hosting - plesk, Hsphere or even helm 4 to some degree - are crap. 90% of my support tickets are related to Hsphere.
We have dotnetpanel running and setting up a server(not for reselling or shared hosting by us) today, and this is as much as anything to get the “feel” for it and support it properly.
We already have one on it up now, but having some issues, I used it as a testbed for 2008 and think I simply have too many server roles installed(everything from hyperv to file server and IIS, etc, its too much, sometimes testing can go too far)
Sometimes it can be a bad thing, but most of the time a great benefit, we don’t jump into unknowns. We like to know what we are offering and how to support/sell/service it fully before making it available, I see no reason since we didn’t jump on the Go Live! licenses from MS that we should rush into this and make mistakes, it will be done right
Dotnetpanel /2.8.2/ have some problems - sometimes if you enter DNS record it is duplicated by control panel and cannot be deleted from user’s control panel even if you delete the domain and add it again. But i think Hsphere have similar problems with DNS records sometimes. The function that I like most in DNP is backup/restore account - I hope when jodo launches DNP reseller hosting I will be able to move my reseller account here from another host easyly.
I’d say it would be near impossible to make such a move to be honest, esp on the VPS and limited space and resources like RAM, Plesk is already heavy on the ram and you’d be battling out a lot of conflicts.
Some kind of update would be nice indeed. Time has been standing still for a while now at JodoHost, due to lack of development of the existing control panel.
There isn’t anything you can do about that, but to be honest I would have expected you to have an alternative up and running in another server cluster by now.
We are working on SQL 2008, as for windows 2008 it is more than just moving to another control panel, it is changing out entire business to offer it in reality. We do have some plans, we have looked hard at dotnetpanel, even as far as having 3 servers installed with it and windows 2008.
It is simply not a long term solution the way we see it. I don’t know how much I should get into it further here, but just some major changes in offering different CPs without the ‘windows/linux combo’ that hsphere has offered. We understand that it is getting to be some demand for windows 2008, but we really want to offer something unique and not just more of the same. We may well do ‘more of the same’ while working on the long term options as well.
however I must say while there is a lot fo hype, windows 2008 is good and all, but there is no show stoppingly great features to it that are missing in 2003, like there was with windows 2000-> 2003 change. Mostly it is more granular level of controls. Same goes for SQL 2008 over 2005, 2005 was a lot mroe progressive in changes, where SQL 2008 just adds on to them, and we’ve discovered there is pretty much no way to load a SQL 2008 DB on SQL 2005 without going a full data export, as it doesn’t honor compatibility modes like SQL 2005 does(you can set them, but doesn’t mean it will allow backwards move).
