If I understand you correctly, I have seen this problem before, it appears that Hsphere already has a DNS record for the domain somehwere... If a domain exists, even as an alias, somewhere on the system (Hsphere), then you cannot add the domain again. The alias or domain needs to be completely...

I can access the DB file directly on MSSQL8, on table dbo.PortalAlias -- editing / removing these does not seem to have helped. I can also access the HostSettings table -- there I was able to switch off the 'friendly' URLs, but that, again, made no difference. I cannot access DNN itself.
